Twin 50 Lappers At Old Dominion Speedway

David Polenz and the Redline Power Rush team, take to the high bank rough surface of Old Dominion Speedway for the 10th time of the year.

Practice

David takes his 33 Circle K machine to the track in first practice, immediately putting the car into the top 6.  David opted to make a small change for the second practice to try something new. Although he still landed in the top 5, David was not happy with it and the team switched it back for third practice. David was extremely happy with the results of the third practice and was excited for the race!

 Qualifying

After making what thought would be a good adjustment for qualifying, David took the extremely loose, sliding race car to a seventh place starting position with a 16.03. This was his lowest starting spot of the year at Old Dominion, which says a lot about our team and driver’s hard work, when finishing 7th can be disappointing.

 1st 50 Lapper

David started on the inside 4th row, with his On the Run Late Model when the green flag dropped.  He noticed his Gazzu Energy 33 had developed a “loose” condition entering the corner by the 3rd lap of the event.  Most times when a car is sideways entering, it is quite a handful, and very hard to keep from spinning out, and hurts the rest of your corner. David methodically worked his way to the 5th spot even with the condition, and tried to chase down the leaders.  He went to tire conservation mode shortly after realizing the cars handling was getting worse and was starting to lose speed.  David took the first event with a strong top 5 finish even with the unfortunate handling situation.

 2nd 50 Lapper

To separate the two 50 lap races, the caution came out at lap 50 for an unknown amount of laps until the scoring was settled.  David wanted to come down to the Gazzu crew to get his 33 tweaked on, and risk his track position by doing so.  With a slight miscommunication for David to come down a lap earlier, he came down with only one lap remaining until green flag.  It left little time to get back on the track, before the leaders went back racing.  By the time the team could finish the adjustment, David pulled on the track only three quarters of a straightaway ahead of the leaders, who were already up to full speed.  Although the adjustment did wonders, and David had his Hunt Brothers Pizza 33 running the fastest laps of anyone on the track, the caution flag just would not cut him the break he needed.  He drove away from the leaders a full straightaway, to catch up to the rear of the pack.  By then the caution finally came out shortly after he burned his tires up, driving the wheels off of it to get back to the top ten.  With the extra heat cycle under caution hurting the tires worse with only 15 to go, David would climb his way up to a 8th place finish.  As we were proud to bring the car home in one piece, and with solid finishes, we plan to return to ODS August 25th to go for the win!
